Stove Knob Stuck? How to Fix an Electric Range Control Knob

Common causes

Spilled food or grease gumming up the D-shaped shaft underneath the knob is the most frequent cause, followed by a worn-out detent (the little click-stops inside the knob) or a cracked knob base.

Safe DIY steps

First, the quick checks:

• Unplug the range or shut off its breaker before touching the knob.
• Pull the knob straight off the shaft — don't twist or pry at an angle.
• Clean both the shaft and the inside of the knob with a damp cloth and cotton swab.
• Check that the knob isn't cracked before reseating it.

When it's more than the knob

If the knob turns freely but the burner doesn't respond at all, the problem is downstream — likely the switch or control board — and that's a job for a technician.

Preventing it from happening again

Wipe down knobs and the panel around them after cooking, especially after anything that boils over or spatters. A quick clean while the range is still warm (but off and cooled enough to touch safely) removes grease before it hardens into the shaft mechanism.
