GE Profile Cooktop Knob Won't Turn: How to Fix It

A stiff or stuck cooktop knob on a GE Profile range is usually a mechanical issue rather than an electrical fault.
On gas cooktops
Grease and food debris built up around the valve stem is the most common cause of stiffness.
First, the quick checks:
- Turn off the cooktop and let it cool completely before removing any knob.
- Pull the knob straight off to expose the valve stem.
- Clean around the valve stem with a dry cloth, working debris out gently rather than forcing it.
- Check that nothing is gummed up inside the knob itself before reseating it.
On electric cooktops
A misaligned D-shaft or a knob that's cracked internally can cause it to bind — inspect the knob's inner hub for cracks and confirm the shaft isn't bent.
If cleaning doesn't help
A stiff valve on a gas cooktop that doesn't loosen with cleaning may need the valve itself serviced or replaced, which is a job for a technician given the gas connection involved.
Preventing buildup around gas valve knobs
Clean around the base of gas knobs regularly, not just when a boil-over happens — grease accumulates gradually from normal cooking and hardens over time into the valve stem area, which is what eventually causes stiffness.
