Whirlpool dryers are some of the most common machines we service across the GTA. A handful of issues account for most of the calls.
Not heating
A blown thermal fuse — often tripped by restricted airflow rather than failing on its own — is the most frequent cause. A failed heating element is the next most common.
Long dry times
This is almost always an airflow problem: a clogged lint filter, a blocked exhaust vent, or lint buildup inside the duct run, rather than a fault with the dryer itself.
Drum not turning
A snapped drive belt is the usual cause when the motor hums but the drum doesn't move — on most Whirlpool models this is a well-documented, moderate-cost repair.
Squealing or thumping noise
Worn drum support rollers or a glide bearing are common on older units and typically get noisier over several weeks before failing outright.
Burning smell
A faint dusty smell in the first few minutes of a cycle after long storage is usually harmless. A persistent or strong burning smell is not — turn the dryer off, unplug it, and have it inspected before running it again. This can indicate a failing motor, a heating element in contact with lint, or a wiring fault.
