Before booking a repair, a few quick checks can tell you whether it's a simple fix or something that needs a technician.
Won't start
Confirm the machine is getting power, the door is fully closed, and (on many models) that the control lock feature isn't enabled — a small icon on the display usually indicates this.
Won't drain
Check the drain hose for kinks and clean the pump filter, usually accessible behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine — lint, coins, and small items are common culprits.
Won't spin
An unbalanced load is the most common cause — stop the cycle, redistribute the laundry evenly, and restart. If it still won't spin with a balanced load, the issue is likely mechanical.
Leaking
Check the door gasket for tears, the supply hoses for loose connections, and make sure you're not overloading the machine or using too much detergent — excess suds can force water out around the door seal.
Making unusual noise
A grinding or rumbling sound during spin often points to a worn drum bearing. A rhythmic thumping usually means an unbalanced or bulky load rather than a mechanical fault. A squeal on startup can indicate a worn belt on models that use one.
