If your Gaggenau refrigerator is showing an error code, the exact code will vary by model — but on most modern refrigerators, fault codes fall into a handful of general categories: temperature sensing, the defrost system, the sealed cooling system, door sensing, and the electronic control board. Here's how to read what your Gaggenau is telling you, what typically causes it, and when it's worth calling a technician instead of troubleshooting further yourself.
Temperature sensor
A thermistor (temperature sensor) reading is out of the expected range, or the control board isn't receiving a signal from it at all.
Common causes:
- A thermistor that has drifted out of calibration or failed outright
- A loose or corroded connector at the sensor or control board
- Frost or ice buildup physically blocking the sensor

Defrost system

- A failed defrost thermostat that won't call for heat
- A stuck or failed defrost timer or control board relay
Heavy frost on the evaporator coils, usually behind a rear panel in the freezer, is the clearest sign of a defrost fault. Defrost heaters carry line voltage and sit close to refrigerant lines, so diagnosing and replacing this component is a job for a technician.
Compressor / sealed system
The compressor isn't cycling correctly, or the sealed refrigerant system has lost pressure.
Common causes:
- A failing start relay or run capacitor on the compressor
- A refrigerant leak in the sealed system
- A compressor nearing end of life
A compressor that hums without starting, or runs constantly without ever reaching temperature, points here. The sealed system requires refrigerant handling certification to service — this is never a DIY repair.
Door / damper
A door switch isn't confirming the door is closed, or the air damper that controls airflow between the fridge and freezer compartments is stuck.
Common causes:
- A worn door gasket letting warm air in
- A failed door switch
- A damper motor or control stuck in one position
Inspect the door gasket for gaps or tears and confirm the door closes flush on all sides. If the gasket looks fine and the door closes properly but the fault persists, the damper or door switch needs a technician's diagnosis.
Electronic control board
The main control board is reporting an internal fault rather than a specific component failure.
Common causes:
- A power surge or brownout that corrupted the board's memory
- A failing relay or component on the board itself
- A wiring fault feeding the board an incorrect signal from another part
