If your Whirlpool dishwasher is showing an error code, the exact code will vary by model — but on most modern dishwashers, fault codes fall into a handful of general categories: water fill, drainage, the heating element, door sensing, and the electronic control board. Here's how to read what your Whirlpool is telling you, what typically causes it, and when it's worth calling a technician.
Water fill
The dishwasher isn't detecting the expected water level, or the inlet valve isn't filling correctly.
Common causes:
- A kinked or shut-off water supply line
- A clogged inlet valve screen
- A failed float switch or water level sensor
Confirm the shutoff valve under the sink is fully open, and check that the float switch at the bottom of the tub moves freely. If supply and float both check out, the inlet valve or sensor needs a technician's diagnosis.
Drain / flow
The dishwasher isn't draining or circulating water as expected.
Common causes:
- A clogged drain filter or basket at the bottom of the tub
- A kinked drain hose
- A failing drain or circulation pump
Remove and rinse the drain filter at the bottom of the tub — this is the most common cause and is safe to check yourself. If the filter is clear and the hose isn't kinked, the pump likely needs replacing.
Heating element / thermistor
The heating element isn't reaching temperature, or the thermistor reading is out of range.

- A burned-out heating element
- A failed thermistor
- The control board not sending power to the element
There is no reliably homeowner-safe check here — the element carries line voltage. Any heating-related code is worth a technician's diagnosis rather than DIY testing.
Door / latch
The door isn't confirming a secure, sealed close.

- A worn door gasket
- A misaligned latch
- A failed door switch
Inspect the gasket for gaps or tears and confirm the door latches without needing extra force. If the gasket and latch look fine, the door switch needs replacing.
Electronic control board
The main control board is reporting an internal fault rather than a specific component failure.
Common causes:
- A power surge or brownout that affected the board
- A failing relay or component on the board itself
- A wiring fault feeding it an incorrect signal
Unplug the dishwasher (or switch off its breaker) for 60 seconds before restoring power — this clears a one-off glitch on many models. If the code returns immediately, the board itself needs professional diagnosis.
